Sister Barbara Ann Ford died violently in Guatemala on May 5, 2001--she was shot to death.
She was a Sister with the Sisters of Charity, Bronx, New York. As a registered nurse, she worked for two decades helping the civil war victims in Guatemala.
She also assisted efforts to help recover bodies buried in mass graves during the war. She also helped in a mental health project to help people deal with their memories.
She had worked as a Health Administrator for the Diocese of Quiche since 1989, a region which saw some of the worst massacres.
She is survived by her Mother, brother and sister.
She was 62 years of age at the time of her death.

I had the distinct honor of knowing her in St. Clare's Nursing School when we were both students there.
I thought at the time that she was the most saintly person I had ever known in my life. Although she had a fine sense of humour and sense of fun.
I have never met anyone before or since I more highly regarded.
The most important thing I wanted to tell her, when sadly I found that she had died was that I found Christ--and am so happy I did. For it changed my life and enabled me to withstand much adversity.
When I telephoned the Sisters of Charity to ask them about the terrible news, I remarked to one of the Sisters that I had wanted to tell her about my finding Christ.
The Sister said, "She knows it now--anyway."
I'm sure she does.
God rest your soul, Sister Barbara.
I'm so happy I knew you at least for the time that I did.
