Ellis W. Brock Dies of Wounds

Ellis W. Brock, 65-year-old farmer of Dade County, Georgia, died in Newell's Sanitarium late Thursday afternoon from gunshot wounds received in a quarrel with his son-in-law, Irby J. Smith. The fatal shooting occurred on the Brock farm near Trenton, Ga., early Thursday morning.

According to R.J. Brock, son of the dead man, the shooting grew out of a quarrel between his father and Smith over the removal of some of Smith's property from the farmhouse. Brock said that Smith fired three shots at his father, one entering his stomach, one the left arm and the third going into the ground.

Sheriff Grover Tatum of Dade County said Thursday that he had not arrested Smith and would not do so unless members of Brock's family signed warrants. Brock said before he died that he didn't want a charge issued against his relative. Members of the family said that they would not prosecute Smith "now" because of his wish.

Brock is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Amos Hurt of Ider, Alabama; Mrs. Eddie Morelock of Fort Payne, Mrs. I.J. Smith of Trenton, Mrs. M.G. Carter, Mrs. O.W. Stewart and Mrs. Howard Roper, all of Chattanooga; five sons, W.F. and R.J. Brock of Trenton, W.G. Brock of Fort Payne and H.B. and C.M. Brock of Long Beach, California: three brothers, Reuben of Collinsville, Alabama; Joe of Dawson, Alabama, and Guron of Steeles, Alabama; four sisters, Mesdames Ed Oliver, Frank Oliver, Jack Everett and Luke Smith of Sand Rock, Alabama and twenty grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Town Creek Baptist Church, eight miles west of Fort Payne at 11 a.m. Sunday, the Revs. Messrs. Ledford and Sparks officiating. Burial will be in the Town Creek Cemetery, with the Turner-Williams Funeral Home in charge.
