He then married Sarah Weaver (sister to his brother-in-law John Weaver). They went on to have five children; Rebecca, Thomas, Sarah, Catherine,and Jane. Sarah died at the age of 44.
John then went on to marry his third and final wife,
Mary Johnston McMillan and father six more children; Mary Ann, William, Reverend Robert McMillan, Samuel McMillan, William McMillan II, and Isaac McMillan.
He was drafted to serve in the war of 1812. He served and then returned home and lived at the farm until his death.
