BEN T. BROOKS DIES SATURDAY; ILL EIGHT DAYS--
Well Known Business Man And Churchman Succumbs To The Effects Influenza And Pneumonia--Funeral This Afternoon At 3 O'clock
After an illness of a week and Sunday Mr. Ben T. Brooks, one of the best known and most highly esteemed businessmen and churchmen of the community, died yesterday afternoon at 2:10 o'clock. Mr. Brooks was taken ill with influenza on Friday of last week, and gradually grew worse until pneumonia developed. Everything that medical skill and tender nursing could do was done for him but these ministrations were not availing and at the hour stated he passed to the beyond.
Mr. Brooks was born and raised in Columbus. He was fifty three years of age. He has been for many years the head of the Ben T.. Brooks wholesale grocery company in this city and has been very successful in the conduct of his business. He was a member of St. Luke Methodist church, having been a steward and treasurer of the church. He was ready to do his part in any church work.
For several days before his death it was known that Mr. Brooks' condition was exceedingly serious and it was not expected that he would live, but his family and friends continued to hope that he might recover.
Mr. Brooks' father, Mr. Joseph Brooks, survive him. His wife and three children also survive him. They are Miss Claudia Brooks, of New York, and Messrs. W. C. Brooks and Jordan Brooks, of Columbus. One brother, Mr. Z. D. Brooks, and one sister, Mrs. W. J. Jordan, of Columbus, also survive him.
The funeral will take place this afternoon from St. Luke Methodist church at 3 o'clock, the services being conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. A. Thomas. The interment will be in Riverdale cemetery. The following gentlemen will act as pall-bearers: Active: I. R. Hendley, F. J. Dudley, L. R. Aldridge, Carl Roundtree, F. B. Dexter, Chas. W. Moore. Honorary: Jno. D. Schnell, Jno. H. Lewis, T. Hicks Fort, Joe P. Holmes, J. H. Dimon, J. J. Kaufman, Geo. S. Hamburger, G. M. Ho-o-r. per: Lois Goodin Hottinger
