George was born in Buffalo, NY, and crossed the plains with Captain John C. Fremont in 1848. He was a constable in Clayton, California, from 1860 to 1894. He also built the Chapman Hotel in Clayton in 1863, but a fire destroyed much of the hotel and George and his family moved out of town. They later returned to Clayton between 1870 and 1880.
