Son of Sarah Edwards Choate and Richard Choate of Alleghany County, NC. Died from wounds at the Battle of Cold Harbor.William T. Choate was born and raised in the part of Ashe County, NC that was sectioned off in 1859 to become Alleghany County. He was the son of Richard "Dickie" Choate and Sarah "Sallie" Edwards. His brother John was killed in Richmond in September of 1862. His brother Sowell died July of 1863 at Gettysburg. As William lay dying, he spoke of his home in the mountains and asked someone to tell his wife that he desired that she name their baby son, who was born November 1863, after him... which she did.
