Veva Jackson Lickey died in Marshall on Oct. 20, 2004, at the age of 97. She was born on a farm in Grundy County on March 25, 1907, the second of four girls born to Lettie Smith Jackson and William Walter Jackson. After attending a one room school house for grades one through eight, Veva went to high school in nearby Galt, where she met her future husband, Harold L. Lickey, both of them graduating in the class of 1925, she as salutatorian and he as valedictorian. During the following summer, Veva and her sister Corinne served as child caretakers at the Baby Fold, an orphanage in Normal, Illinois. Then Veva went to Culver Stockton College where she earned a teaching certificate after three terms of study. Veva taught school for the following five years, four of these in a one room school house of the kind she herself had attended. Veva and Harold were married Aug. 6, 1931, and immediately moved to Marshall where Harold was the newly hired teacher of high school science and mathematics. The couple rapidly became involved in community activities. At First United Methodist Church they participated enthusiastically in all manner of church activities from teaching Sunday School to organizing church suppers. Veva was a founding member of the GM Chapter of PEO, and a founding member of the Monday Club. She was an organizer and volunteer for Meals on Wheels. At one time she held the record for number of volunteer hours served for the Fitzgibbon Hospital Auxiliary. In her only paid work after marriage, Veva founded and administered the school lunch program at Marshall High School in the years 1955 to 1959. Veva was honored as the Woman of the Year by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1956 and again by Missouri Valley College in 1992. It was said of Veva, "She was a good neighbor and a good friend." Veva was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, and her three sisters, Etha Jackson, Buena Jackson Stolberg and Corinne Jackson. She is survived by her son, Marvin Gordon-Lickey and his wife Barbara of Eugene, Oregon; five grandchildren and stepgrandchildren, Sarah Diwan, David Lickey, Ingrid Wickelgren, Abraham Wickelgren and Rachel Clark; eight great-grandchildren; one niece, Nancy Finke; and one great-niece. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at First United Methodist Church in Marshall with Rev. Dave Huck officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Harold and Veva Lickey Scholarship Fund or Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra in care of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall.
