Cadwalader was a grandson of Anthony Joseph Drexel, financier and founder of Drexel University; nephew of Saint Katharine Drexel; and great-great-grandson of Colonel Lambert Cadwalader, an officer in the American Revolution who represented New Jersey at the Continental Congress. His son Anthony J. Drexel Cadwalader described him as "a true, old-school Philadelphia gentleman" who loved the city and its culture, and his Chester County farm, where he enthusiastically tended the animals, mended fences, and cut the fields on his 1946 tractor. "He loved farm life," said his son, who added that his father just recently had helped him dig fence-post holes at the farm.Mr. Cadwalader was a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club, the Philadelphia Club, State of the Schuylkill, the Brook Club, and American Legion Post 491 in Kennett Square. He was a former treasurer of the Bryn Mawr Hound Show and the American Legion, and a vestry member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Kennett Square. He was married to Joan Hayden.
