Second of three daughters born to Charles Clement Wood, and Fannie Martha Pickett Wood (Dodge). "Putsy", or "Put" as she was known to her family and friends, was named by her father, in honor of his mother, Mary Putney Wood. Charles Wood operated "Champlain Marine and Reality" in Burlington, Vt, and like the idea of having a daughter named Put Put.
Born in New Haven, near her Maternal Grandparents, Lilla and Edwin Starr Picket, the young Wood family moved to Burlington. Charles Wood died in 1937, and shortly after that, the family moved to Philidelphia. At the age of 14 Putsy returned to Burlington, and put herself through Burlington High School, and then The Universiy of Vermont, where she was a sister of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, with her older sister Martha. She graduated in 1950 from UVM with a major in Mathematics, and Physics. Putsy moved to New York City for a year and worked for Esso Oil on Rockefeller Plaza. In 1951 she married Sanford A. Smith III and moved to Pittsfield Mass, and worked for a year at General Electric in the transformer division. In 1952 she followed convention and stayed at home to raise a family. In 1970, Putsy returned to the workforse as a substitute teacher. In 1971, Sam Smith died, and Putsy went to back to school, as a student and got her Masters in Education from North Adams State College. After several temporary jobs, The Smith family moved to Brattleboro Vermont in 1977, after Putsy accepted a position at Brattleboro Union High School,as an eight grade Math and Science teacher, from where she retired in 1995.
Putsey was survived by her two sisters; (Fannie) Martha (Wood)Sullivan of Jamesport, N.Y. and Lois Ellen (Wood) Moran of Piscataway, N.J. Her son Charles Alvah Smith, his wife Melissa Dollie Smith, their Son Frances Lyman Smith, of Towson, MD., a second son, Thomas Maxwell Rodden Smith, his partner Bob Knauf, Tom's two sons Geoffrey William Smith, and Thomas Winnfield Smith, of Torrington, Conn., a third son, Sanford Alvah Smith IV, his partner James Claire Devereaux,of Boynton Beach ,Florida and one daughter Mary Ellen (Smith) Barrett, her husband Timothy Barrett, and their two children Tanner James Barrett, and Madison Taylor Barretts of West Chesterfield N.H., as well as her beloved dog, Widget.
