Born in England, James emigrated to Canada around 1855. He married Elizabeth "Betsey" COLE (1846 - 1919) around 1864. Father of 10 children: Lavina (b. c. 1863), James A. (c. 1865 - 1937), Orlando (1868 - 1910), Caroline "Carrie" (1871 - 1951), Clarissa "Clara" Jane (1873 - 1945), Anna Mae (b. c. 1875), John Henry (1877 - 1955), Rosa Bell (b. 1879), Benjamin (1881 - 1888) and Alexander BARBER (1881 - 1955).

James and his family emigrated to Lapeer, Lapeer County, Michigan c. 1876. By 1900, he was living in what is now Lake Orion, Oakland County, Michigan, and by 1910, lived in Mt. Morris, Genesee County, Michigan. He died from injuries to the spine sustained from a fall.
