Born at Baroile farmstead in Glassary Parish, Argyll, Scotland. Emigrated about 1854 to Australia. Married Isabella Crockett in 1863 and had eight children. Lived in Muswellbrook. Owned a string of general stores in the Hunter River Valley. Died at age 70 while visiting family in the Sydney area.
