She majored in home economics at Kearney State College, graduating in December of 1970. She received her master's degree in guidance counseling from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, and her doctorate from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in May of 1989. She began working for the Omaha Public School system in 1971 as a home economics instructor at Bryan Middle School and later as an assistant supervisor, supervisor, human resources and finally as the principal of the Omaha Public School Career Center.
