I did not know Shawn or his family, but his story is known well in this area. My father was listening to the police scanner when the abduction took place on August 31, 1985. I went out looking for him as soon as my father told me about it. The entire community looked for Shawn to no avail.

Shawn was abducted while riding his bike to the local convenience store to buy a root beer. The case was treated as a kidnapping until September 13, 1985, when his body was discovered by the side of a road, covered with a tent of leaves, twigs, and brush.

The man who took Shawns life (Ronald Lloyd Bailey) was captured and is now serving a life sentence in a Michigan prison. Details of the murder are one of the subjects of " The Journey into Darkness" a book written by author John Douglas.

I will never forget this young man or the heart sickness I felt along with the entire community as we seached for and held out hope that he would be found alive. His beautiful tombstone tells the story of what this young man meant to his loving family. It is one of the most touching epitaphs that I have ever seen. It reads:

Son
Brother . Friend
Smiling . Hugging . Teasing
Family . Gratiot-Lk . Mr. Peabody . Mouse
Inventor . Artist . Biker
Fun-Loving
"SHAWN"

A Great Big "Thank You" to Millie for sponsorship of this Memorial. What a wonderful thing to do.

A Huge hug goes to Charlie for completing Shawns memorial by adding his picture. Charlies actions were an answer to prayer.
