mandy was born 4 weeks premature and her lungs collapsed 5 minutes after her birth. she was placed on a ventilator for 2 weeks and required a tracheostomy tube in which to breathe at 3 months and a feeding tube, both for the rest of her life. the struggle to breathe caused her to develop cerebral palsy within the first 3 months but it didn't affect her joy and love for life. my husband and i were trained in the hospital to care for her at home until he died of a massive heart attack in 1983 which left me alone to care for her. at that time, my late husband's insurance paid for a nurse and physical, speech, and occupational therapy to assist me with her care. she died 3 1/2 years later from pnemonia and during the last 11 months of her life, an iv team came to my home and trained me to run antibiotics in to keep her out of the hospital. for everything that she went went through and she suffered so much throughout her tiny life, mandy always woke with a smile on her face each day. she loved life.
mandy was a shining star who inspired many people, even strangers who met her by her strong will to live and joy for life. she inspired people to want to become better human beings. when she smiled her beautiful smile, she lit up a room. i'll forever be influenced by my little girl's sweet and loving personality. she's truly one of god's favorite angels and will always be missed and loved by me.
