Explorer. A Spanish conquistador, he claimed for his country territory that is now part of Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. Born in Orduna, Spain, de Garay first arrived in Peru in 1543. He founded the city of Santa Fe, Argentina, in 1573, and established the first permanent settlement at Buenos Aires in 1580. (The original Buenos Aires encampment, founded in 1536, had been destroyed some years earlier). While travelling between these two cities, de Garay and his party were massacred by natives.
