Mirtie Defield was born in Denver, Worth County, Missouri. She died in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri at a local hospital; however, she was a resident of Maryville, Missouri and had lived there for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Her father was Horatio "Nelson" Defield (b: ABT 1837 in Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada) and her mother was Rebecca Packer (b: 01 AUG 1849).

She married George Irvin Branson on 26 APR 1892 in Worth County. She was survived by several children, including: Ella (Branson) Reed of Albuquerque, N.M.; Fenton Branson of Oregon, MO; Dillard Branson of St. Joseph, MO; Lorain (Branson) Beck of Wathena, KS; Alpha Phillippe of St. Joseph, MO; and Welby Vernon Branson of St. Joseph, MO.

She was also survived by a brother, Guy E. Defield, of Worth County, 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Her funeral was held at the Price Funeral home, Rev. Melvin Hill officiating.

I was finally able to get the library and do some research. I got Mirtie's obituary and learned that she was buried at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Maryville.

Note for genealogy researchers:
She was also known as Myrtle.

Interestingly, genealogy research revealed that the name "Defield" could have evolved from the name "Dunfield" in the 1700s due, in part, to the American Revolution. Mirtie's ancestor, Edward Dunfield, was supposedly a Tory whose property in New York was seized. He fled to London, Ontario, Canada and later changed his name to "Defield" before he returned with his family to the United States. There has also been a story passed down through the family that one of our ancestors had to flee and hide his identity, because he was wanted for murder. I personally, however, believe that the accurate family name is "Defield," and if anything "Dunfield," was a temporary deviation.
