Simon Barker was born in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory which is now Oklahoma in April 1839. He was married to Katherine from Tennessee. He died in Braden, Oklahoma in LeFlore County. He is buried at Fort Coffee Cemetery in Spiro, Oklahoma LeFlore County next to his wife Katherine.

Simon Barker was a corporal with the 83rd Infantry Company G in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) during the Civil War. He enlisted on August 15, 1863, and was discharged October 9, 1865. He is listed on the African American Civil War memorial in Washington D.C. He is on Plaque C-89.
