The son of Henry & Levina Bankes, he was a man whose surname was spelled a lot of ways.
He married Margaret Catherine Wanamaker and fathered Jacob Henry (b. 03/11/51), Sarah Jane (b. 08/05/56 - married Daniel W. Fry), Henry "Harry" (b. @1858), George (b. @1860), William H. (b. 02/19/63), John (b. 10/27/65), Ida M. (b. @1867), Amanda (b. @1869), Kathryn (b. 05/14/78 - married an Engle), and Norman Sutter (b. 08/09/79). [NOTE: Could the last two children be from a different mother than Margaret?] In 1860, he was a a laborer living with his family in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the oddly overstated age of thirty-eight in Middletown, Dauphin County, August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharge with his company May 29, 1863. He is in the company register as "Bancus."
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-one and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 27, 1865, as a private with Co. H, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866. He is in the company register as "Bankeys," perhaps suggesting its pronunciation, but his pension indexes spell it "Bankus."

In 1870, he was living with his family in Conoy Township, Lancaster County, but he died in nearby Middletown, Dauphin County. He is in the 1850 census as "Bankey," in the 1870 census and on his tombstone as "Bankes," and his obituary in the Harrisburg Daily Independent spells it "Bankeys," which suggests the name's pronunciation.
