Lewis C. Burriss, came to California, from South Carolina, in 1849. Several years later he went to Missouri, returning to California the following year. In all he made four trips by covered wagon, serving as wagonmaster, and in 1856 he settled in Napa Valley with his bride, Sarah Johnson Burriss.

The following year, they moved to Sonoma County and in 1865 the family moved to Scotts Valley, where he took up a 440 acre government grant, which is still owned by the family and where six generations have made their home.
