Enlisted and mustered in on 27 August 1862 at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, Troop E, Michigan 5th Cavalry Regiment as a Private; he was residing in Goodland Township, Lapeer County, Michigan prior to his enlistment at 20 years of age; captured and imprisoned on 19 October 1863 at Buckland Mills, Fauquier County, Virginia; subsequently paroled; 13 July 1864 died of disease (dysentery) as a POW at Andersonville Prison, Macon County, Georgia.
