Lt. Col. William Edison Blagg, Jr.
Of Dover, DE died Sunday, December 3, 2000 in the Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 82. He was a decorated veteran of 2 wars and recipient of Delaware's highest military honor.
Born in Marysville, MO, September 17, 1918, Colonel Blagg was the son of William Edison and Lola Ellen (Wright) Blagg. He joined the US Army Corps in 1940, and after aviation cadet training, flew C-47 transports on the Africa/India route during World War II. He was chief pilot at Accra, The Gold Coast (now Ghana) in 1943. He later helped pioneer air transport routes in the United States, flying from Love Field, Dallas, TX.
Leaving the Air Force in 1945 to pursue a business career, he was a US Reserve Air Force officer in the New Mexico Air National Guard. He was called to active duty for the Korean War in 1951 and earned the Bronze Star while serving with the 315th Troop Carrier Wing at Brady Field, Kyushu, Japan. His unit won the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation for combat airlift operations during that period. During the height of the Cold War, Blagg was liaison officer for the Ground Observer Corps in Delaware, and for his service was awarded the state's highest military honor, the Conspicuous Service Cross of Delaware. Blagg served as Provost Marshal and commander of the Air Police Squadron at Kindley Air Force Base, Bermuda, between 1960 and 1963. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1965 at Dover Air Force Base, where he was Chief of Security and Law Enforcement. After retirement from the Air Force, he became Delaware's chief state detective and deputy attorney general for extraditions, heading the investigative arm of the Attorney General's office for 10 years. He retired from that post in 1980.
In Delaware, he continued his lifelong interest in amateur theater, both on and off stage. He was a board member of the Kent County Theater Guild and acted in and directed a number of shows. He delivered a noteworthy performance as Willy Loman in 'Death of a Salesman' and won the Delaware amateur actor for the year award in 1968. In other hobbies, he and his wife built miniature rooms and doll houses and collected music boxes. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife, Claire Cassell Blagg of Moore's Lake; his son, Timothy A. Blagg of Greenfield, MA; his daughter, Barbara Blagg Mosley of Harrington; and by his youngest son, G. Daniel Blagg of Devonshire Bay, Bermuda; his is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Amy Bates Harfeld of Magnolia, USMC Captain Robert L. Bates of Carlsbad, CA, Jessica Bates Moss of Charlottesville, VA, Alan Blagg of New York City, USAF Staff Sgt. Patti Blagg Boulden of Huber Heights, OH, John Blagg of Greenfield, MA; and 5 great grandchildren.
A memorial service is being held at 7 pm Thursday, December 7, 2000 in the TORBERT FUNERAL CHAPEL SOUTH, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd., Dover. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior in the funeral home. Interment will be 1 pm Friday, December 8, 2000 in the Delaware Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro, with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Hwy, Dover, DE 19901.
