He received his bachelor of arts from Grove City College in Grove City, Pa., in 1936; bachelor's of divinity degree from Garrett Biblical Institute in 1939; master of sacred theology and doctor of philosophy from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in 1939; and doctor of theology degree from Iliff School of Theology in Denver in 1944.
He was certified in specialized studies in the humanities and ancient languages from the University of Frankfurt in Germany in 1977, College of Chaplains in Hampton, Va., and Creighton University in Omaha from 1976 to 1978. He also studied with the NearEastern Archaeological Seminar in 1967. He was invited by the Jesuit Institute in Jerusalem as part of a select group of scholars to aid in the translation of Dead Sea Scrolls.
He was a former professor of languages at Northwestern University.
He served the Methodist ministry for more than 65 years and provided pastoral leadership, established missions, outreach programs and church expansion in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Utah and Nebraska. In Nebraska, he served in Gering, Columbus, Grace in Lincoln, Lone Tree Cooperative Ministries in Central City, Olive Crest in Omaha, chaplaincy at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island and on the staff of First Church in Lincoln the last 10 years. He retired as a Methodist minister in 1980.
He was a recipient of Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award, Distinguished Service Award, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Humanitarian Award/Jaycees of America. He was presented with prestigious U.S. Secretary's Award of Excellence in Chaplaincy, recognized superior and exceptional levels of pastoral care to U.S. veterans. He was named to Who's Who in Religion. He had been recognized with hundreds of awards for service to humanity and people of all nations.
