Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company B, 4th Delaware Volunteer Infantry on June 18, 1862. He served in the 4th Delaware until November 9, 1863, when he was discharged from the unit, and commissioned as a Captain and Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers in the United States Army Adjutant General Department. He then served until he was honorably mustered out on September 1, 1866, having been brevetted Major, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in the battles before Petersburg, Va.", and Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers on March 16, 1866 for "faithful and meritorious services connected with the muster out and disbanding of the volunteer armies of the United States".
