He died in the adobe brick house that he built in 1876. This home was in Odessa Township just east of County Road 213. Lars Olsberg & Hans Olsen (nicknamed "Railroad Hans") met each other in Sioux City, Iowa in 1869. Hans Olsen was the first burial at First James River Norsk Lutheran Cemetery and Lars Olsberg was second. They came to Yankton County in 1870 and filed for land. The Olsberg land was 300 acres SW 1/4, Section 10, Township 96, Range 57. Lars made a dugout in the side of the hill and went back to Sioux City to get his family. They settled in Odessa Township in August of 1870. After he paid the man who hauled there belongings from Sioux City, he had a mere 10 dollars to start a new life. At that time there were Lars, wife Maria, step-daughter Sofia Schanche, daughter Nettie and in December 1870 a new baby boy Jul Stephen Olsberg.
