Orris Pierre Knight (1st Great-grandfather)
Orris Pierre Knight was born in North Hero, Grand Isle, Vermont on the 2nd of March 1841 to Augustus & Wealtha Ladd Knight. Very little is known of his childhood, the earliest mention of Orris is in the 1850 census (26 August 1850) for North Hero, Grand Isle, Vermont, he is a 9 year old son of Augustus & Wealtha Ladd Knight living with his parents on their farm. Listed in the 1860 census (10 July 1860) he is 18 years old and still living at home in North Hero. On the 18th of September 1861 Orris enlisted as a Corporal in Company B, 1st Calvary Regiment Vermont Vol. and was mustered in 19 November 1861. He was taken prisoner in an engagement with the enemy at Middleton, Virginia, May 24, 1862, he along with other prisoners were marched to Lynchburg, Virginia, he was confined in the rebel prison there for several months, Orris became ill during his imprisonment at Lynchburg, he remained in the Lynchburg prison while other more able prisoners were moved to Bull Island prison near Richmond, Virginia, he was so ill that one of the other men from the 1st Calvary (Warner Gibbs) though for sure that he had died, and so reported that to a newspaper in Vermont. Warner met Orris in October or November of 1862 in the military hospital in Washington, D.C., his health was very poor and he was regarded as completely used up, he was to be discharged at Washington. The general consensus from neighbors and family was the he was not the same man (physically) that went into the army. Orris had married Mary Haynes in 1861 before enlisting in the army, she was the daughter of Dr. Elijah & Polly Ann Darrow Haynes, born on the 18th of July 1840, in North Hero, Grand Isle, Vermont. In the 1870 census (25th day of June 1870), Lagrange Post Office, he is listed as a farmer, his sons (Frederick & Ernest), wife and father are living with him. In 1878 he was elected State Representative, in 1882 he ventured out west to Jamestown, Stutsman, North Dakota to his son Henry Knight who had gone to the Dakota's in search of gold, Orris returned October the 19th, 1883, reporting that all the North Island boys in that section are in a prosperous condition, Orris leased his farm to Henry Parker and the spring of 1884 intended to head west to try his hand at gold mining (don't know if he ever went). By January of 1901 Orris was the Grand Isle Clerk and also a deputy sheriff, and the keeper of the county jail. On 1 February, 1902 Rural Free Mail Delivery came to North Hero and Orris Pierre Knight was the first mail carrier (1 February 1902 – 28 February 1903). Orris held several other positions with the county government including Justice of the Peace, for the County of Grand Isle for a two year term, to begin on 1 December 1912. He was approved for his disabled veterans pension on 7 April 1911 which he received until the time of his death, at which time his widow received a widows pension. On the 1st of January at North Hero, Mary Haynes Knight passed away, leaving Orris with 8 children ranging in age from Frederick L. 13 years old to Hardy Jay Knight 2 years old. On 22 March 1884 in North Hero, Orris married wife #2 Sarah Ann Darrow, daughter of Jonathan & Augusta Darrow, born 29 November 1852 in North Hero. Orris Pierre Knight lived to the age of 73, he died on the 9th of January 1915 of Organic heart disease, he was buried in the South Cemetery, North Hero, Grand Isle, Vermont (Find A Grave Memorial# 14387559). Sarah Ann Darrow Knight lived to the ripe old age of 77 years old, passing on the 2nd of February 1930, in Burlington, Chittenden, Vermont, she was buried next to her husband in South Cemetery. Orris & Mary Haynes Knight were blessed with 8 Children, six living to maturity, one child Lennie Alta Knight was born to the second marriage.
