Milton Bierly was born in Brennersville; the son of Jacob and Barbara (Minnich) Bierly.

He was first united in marriage to Mary S. Dunihoo, daughter of Eli & Mary J. (Kayels) Dunnihoe/Dunihoo, on March 24, 1867, Eaton, Preble County, Ohio. To this union, two known children were born: Twins - Flora M. and Charles Bierly. Charles was born silently or died within a few hours after his birth and his mother, Mary, followed shortly after, never recovering from the birth of the twins.

Shortly after the death of Mary and Charles, he gave his daughter to his sister, Jennie Alicia (Bierly) Dunnihoo, who raised her as a daughter, with her own daughter of about the same age.

Later, he was united in marriage to Phoebe Ann (Reichard) Bierly, daughter of Daniel Reichard and Sarah Jane Livingston, on May 13, 1871, in Preble County, Ohio, with whom he shares a headstone.
