Professional Hockey Player and Coach. Fred Metcalfe began his playing career in western Canada. In 1928 he turned pro with the Toronto Millionaires of the Can-Pro league. He only stayed there 11 games before joining the American Hockey Association's St. Louis Flyers. He stayed in the AHA with the Tulsa Oilers (1929-32), St. Paul Saints (1932-33) and Kansas City Greyhounds (1934-38). Metcalfe turned to coaching and guided the Lethbridge, Alberta, club to the Allan Cup in 1941. Fred enlisted for service in World War Two and fought in the Pacific with the American 77th Artillery. After the war he returned to coaching in the New York Ranger organization. He guided the NY Rovers for several seasons before ill health forced him to resign. Metcalfe tried to return in 1949-50 but was forced to reliquish the reigns of the Boston Olympics to manager Walter Brown. Fred moved to Los Angeles to be with his brother, Thomas. During a visit to Santa Anita race track, Fred Metcalfe suffered a fatal heart attack. He was 43 yrs.
