Joseph was born in Vilsberg, Moselle, France, which later became part of Germany. The family immigrated and settled in Pesotum, Champaign County, Illinois. He met and married Maria Hettinger there. There were seven children from this marriage. Joseph did not like the harsh winters of the north and continually sought a milder climate. At first he and the family moved to Muenster just during the long cold winters. They did that for several years before settling in Muenster as permanent residents. Joseph and Maria donated the large Crucifixion Group to the Cemetery in 1917 at a cost of $1800.00. For the time that was a lot of money. Of the seven children all are buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery except for George who died as an infant in Pesotum before they left and Rose who became Sr. Anastasia, an Ursuline nun and died in 1966 in Springfield, Illinois.
