Albert D'nean (Ben) Bennett, 47, manager of Greenlawn Mortuary and Memorial Park, died Tuesday at 6 p.m. following a heart attack.
Bennett, who resided at 201 El Cerrito Dr., was at home at the time he was stricken and was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Bennett, a native of Missouri, was born Oct. 16, 1907. He came to Bakersfield with other members of his family as a youth and was graduated from Bakersfield High School. He entered the mortician business and was identified with several Bakersfield mortuaries before joining the staff at Greenlawn in 1940 where he served as manager.
He is survived by his widow, Betty, and by four sisters, Mrs. Betty Sowell, Corona; Mrs. Harriet Philips of Los Angeles; Mrs. Margaret Charles of Hawthorne; and Mrs. Mary Lesner of West Covina, and by his mother, Mrs. Effie V. Harrison, West Covina.
Bennett was active in numerous civic and fraternal organizations, was a member of the Bakersfield Exchange Club, and the Footprinter's Association. He was affiliated with Bakersfield Lodge, F & AM 224; the Scottish Rite Masons; the Kern County Shrine Club; the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Bakersfield 21; the Tejon Court, Order of Amaranth, and was past worthy patron of Security Chaper, Order of Eastern Star. He was a past president of the California Funeral Directors' Association and was also a director of the national organization.
