A 1838 graduate of William and Mary, he gained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1842. In 1844 he married Mary Eliza Smith. He practiced at Port Royal until December of 1862 when he was assigned as Surgeon-in-charge of Hospital Number Nine in Richmond. He remained as such until 1865 when he returned to Port Royal after being paroled.
