Graveside services for Johnny Ray Frederick Sr. “Pops,” 79, of Killeen, will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.

Mr. Frederick died Jan. 28, 2015, at his residence. He was born Sept. 8, 1935, in Austin to Joe and Hattie Frederick.

He grew up in Austin and attended Austin High School. In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for five years aboard the USS Wisconsin and the USS Gurke. He graduated from San Diego Adult Education High School in 1958.

Over the years, he held several jobs in the electronic field, being employed by Boeing, General Dynamics, Martin Marietta and the U.S. Army as an electronic technician. He retired from Civil Service in 1976 after 17 years. Retirement did not slow him down. He ran a successful hay baling operation and was known to many as “The Haybaler.” He sponsored numerous drivers at the Texas Thunder Race track and made many trips to Colorado to hunt and fish with his sons. He was the owner and operator of The Place Novelties in downtown Killeen for over 30 years.

Mr. Frederick married Margaret Wittwer on April 26, 1958, in Mossyrock, Wash. They were happily married for 56 years.

In 2000, he was named Business Associate of the year by the Heart of Texas Chapter of ABWA. Being the avid outdoorsman, he supported many Ducks Unlimited events over the years. His love of agriculture is a legacy that will be shared for generations as he spent many hours in his garden perfecting the art of raising vegetables sharing those skills with his children and grandchildren. Johnny was a 4-H leader serving as one of the charter leaders of the Maxdale 4-H club. Raising animals for the stock shows began early in his life as he participated in the Austin Livestock show while in junior high. His children, grandchildren and now his great-grandchildren continue this legacy by serving as a County Extension agent, FFA sponsor and by raising animals for the Bell County and Killeen livestock shows.

His family came first. He was their biggest supporter and always encouraged them to achieve their goals and to be the best at what they did. He was proud of his children and told them often.

Mr. Frederick was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Joe Frederick Jr., Robert Frederick and George Frederick; and two great-grandchildren, Riley and Emma Adair.

Survivors include his wife Margaret of Killeen; his children, Johnny Jr. and his wife, Kim, Barbara Fitzgerald and her husband, Lynn, of Killeen, Guy Frederick of Florence and Cathy Holland and her husband, Mark, of Youngsport; six grandchildren, Sarah Crawford, Tanya Fernandez, Wesley Fitzgerald of Killeen, Erin Adair of Birome, Caitlin Jackson of Lorenzo and David Holland of Lubbock; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Gerald Frederick of Pflugerville; five sisters, Betty Briscoe of Hurst, Cora Nell of Waco, Mamie Edwards of Orlando, Fla., Linda Terry of Temple, Patricia “Teetcy” Baxes of Liberty Hill; and many nieces and nephews scattered all across the United States.
