Commissioned, March 22, 1916, Medical Corps , 71st NY Infantry Regiment. He mustered in for service with the 71st NY Infantry Regiment, for service on the Mexican Border, as a 1st Lieutenant, June 26, 1916 - Oct. 6, 1916. The regiment was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas, as part of the 6th NY Division ( later to be the 27th Division ).

World War, he was assigned to the 106th Infantry Regiment 27th Division, then to the 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division ( Feb. 7, 1918 ), as the battalion medical officer. Promoted Captain, April 3, 1917.

After training at Camp Wadsworth, SC, the 105th Machine Gun Battalion deployed to Europe, aboard the USS Calomares, on May 17, 1918, from Newport News, VA. The battalion docked at St. Nazaire, France, May 30, 1918. After additional combat training in France, the 27th Division entered the Lines in mid-July. He saw combat in both Belgium & France, and wounded in action ( gassed ), date unknown. He was awarded the Silver Star for his war service.

Returned to the States, February 26, 1919, aboard the USS Leviathan, from Brest, France, docking at Hoboken, NJ, March 6, 1919. He most likely marched in the great " Welcome Home Parade " for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City, on March 25, 1919. Discharged as a Captain, April 1, 1919, Camp Upton, NY.

Awarded the Silver Star, order S. O. 87, 27th Division " For great courage, skill and devotion to duty in personally supervising the care and evacuation of killed and wounded in an area swept by enemy shell fire. This on the evening of October 16, 1918 just prior to the battle of Le Selle River, France, while the division was relieving the British in the front line ".
