John Franklin Coffin was born in Blue River township in Hancock County, Indiana. His parents were Nathan Dix Coffin and Mary H. Wheeler.
He married his first wife, Mary C. Rawls, on Oct. 17, 1861. Their daughter Iola was born in 1865 and their son Oliver was born in 1866. Mary died in 1881.
On March 1, 1883, John married Mary "Mollie" Stewart, a music teacher from Franklin township, Montgomery County, Indiana. Their son Charles Earle Coffin was born in 1884 in Greenfield, Hancock County, Indiana.
John was a lifelong farmer and resident of Hancock County.
