"Aged Citizen died at Fairfield Home
W. T. Watson passes away after having obtained in ninety-fifth year. W. T. Watson, one of the oldest citizens of Freestone County died at his home in Fairfield last Monday after a long illness and was buried in the family lot in
the Fairfield Cemetery Tues.
Mr. Watson was born at Halifax Courthouse, Virginia on Dec 17, 1824 and his parents moved to Tennessee in 1836 and came to Freestone County in 1850. He was married to Miss Mary Weaver in 1853, his wife dying a few years ago at an advanced age. For many years he has engaged in the general merchantile business at Fairfield for a long time having his freight hauled from old Harrisburg and later from Bryan as railroad was built to that city.
When his three sons T. R. Watson of Dallas, and J. B. Watson of Teague and W. S. Watson of Fairfield (all of whom survive) reached manhood the firm of W. T. Watson and Sons was noted throughout this section and had an immense business. For the last twenty years Mr. Watson had been retired from active life and continued to live at his old home in Fairfield. His three sons mentioned above and one daughter, Mrs. L. D. Lillard who died a number of years ago blessed this union.
A large number of grandchlidren and other relatives in this and Limestone County also survive him.
Mr. Watson had been an active member of the Baptist Church for more than 60 years and until age placed its palsied grip upon his vigor was one of the pillars of that church at the county seat. During all his long and useful life
he was an upright citizen of whom no breath of suspension ever cast its blight and for several decades of history was the means of assisting many worthy enterprises which helped to build up Freestone County.
