2LT, 2nd USAAF., Killed in Action (KIA) WW II. He was killed when his aircraft crashed at Norwich, County Norfolk, England returning from an operational Mission to Hallendorf, Germany on his 5th mission. He was a navigator. He was assigned to the 2nd Air Division USAAF, 458th Bomber Group, 753rd Bomber Squadron. His aircraft, a B-24 Liberator, was nicknamed "Lassie Come Home". Sadly, three (3) children were playing in their garden when "Lassie Come Home" crashed. Two were killed: Mary Elizabeth Kemp, age 5, and Brian Maurice Jones, age 9. Mary Elizabeth Kemp's twin sister, Margaret Kemp, survived the crash. In 1955 Mary's sister, Margaret, married American USAF service member Donald Frederic Kinsey. They moved to the USA and state of Michigan. SSGT Kinsey died in 2016.

2LT John Joseph Clayborn's grandfather, Buchanan "Buck" C. Claiborne, was killed in a gunfight in Frio County, Texas in 1886 over a fence being put up on his property. His great-grandfather, James Elam Cliborn, was shot in the shoulder during the gunfight.

When John Joseph Clayborn signed his WW II Draft Card he was working for Western Union Telegraph Company in Oakland, California. His mother, Hannah Clayborn, was listed on his Draft Card.
