An Honest Man~~ Henry was a former slave who came to Michigan after the Civil War [1861-1865] in his senior years. He had worked on a plantation in Virginia. When he was a boy President Washington [1732-1799] was received as a guest in the home of his master. Another thing that he remembered was Major General Lafayette [1757-1834] of France, being paraded through town in 1824 when he was invited to come to America for a visit. All that Henry wanted from life was a log cabin, a family, a patch of corn, a pig, a garden and to be able to pay any debts that he felt forced to incur. And he had and did just that, if only a little belated and not all at once! Henry had attained the "American Dream." Henry outlived his children and was cared for by one of his grandaughters during his declining years. He died at about the age of 130.
