Husband of Essie Thompson Crosby

Josiah was also known as Joe Crosby, Josiah S. Crosby, J.S. Crosby, and Josiah Crosby. The children learned after his death that he was born Benjamin Josiah Crosby, but he dropped Benjamin. Then when he went to work for the railroad, they needed a middle name, so they divided up "Jo siah" and made it Josiah S, or just J.S. Crosby. He worked for the ACL Railroad and later the SCL after their merger, first as a laborer and later as Section Forman, for a total of 44 years. After his retirement, Josiah and Essie moved to Walterboro and lived at 138 Warren Street until their respective deaths.

He dropped out of school at 16, having only completed the 4th or 5th grade, but he was very intelligent and self-taught. He stayed abreast of world events and excelled in math, spelling, writing and communication with his fellow man.

Josiah was a man of strong conservative convictions, a devout believer in God, and served in many positions in the Churches he attended.

His first marriage to Lilla Mae (maiden name unk) ended after 10 years and no children were born of this marriage.
