Services for Kenneth LeRoy Turner, 60, of Marietta, were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, in the Chapel at Moore Funeral Home, Arlington, Texas. Interment was in the Moore Memorial Gardens, Arlington.
He was born March 5, 1945, in Baltimore, Maryland, to John Lee and Naomi Turner, and died Saturday, May 21, 2005.
Mr. Turner graduated from Overlea High School in Baltimore in 1963 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966. He and Donna Beaty were married in 1967, and together they had two sons, David and Jeremy.
He served in the U.S. Army as a CW2 assigned to the 1st Air Cavalry Division, C/229th from January 1968 to January 1969. Mr. Turner distinguished himself and his country as a UH-1 Med-Evac Helicopter Pilot, and was awarded a Bronze Star, an Air Medal with 33 Oak Leaf Clusters, and an Air Medal with "V" Device for Heroism. His first assignment in-country was to extract U.S. Marines from Khe Sanh during the TET offensive. After returning home, Mr. Turner served as a Police Officer/Med-Evac Helicopter Pilot for the Maryland State Police for three years.
In 1974, the Turners moved to Texas where he joined the DFW Airport Board as a police officer. He retired in March 2000 as Detective Sergeant after 25 years of service. While with DFW, he earned a B.S. in Law Enforcement from Abilene Christian University, a State of Texas Master Law Enforcement Certificate, a Master Fire Fighter Certificate, and EMT certification.
Mr. Turner and his family bought acreage near Marietta in 1995, and worked to fulfill his dream of a beautiful log home on a hill overlooking rolling hills and grassy pasturelands. He joined Siemens Dematic Corp. in Marietta for two years before becoming long-term disabled. He then retired to his beloved ranch.
Survivors include his loving wife and caregiver, Donna Beaty Turner; two sons, David and Jeremy Turner; a daughter-in-law, Melissa Wilson Turner; a grandson, Cade Turner; his mother, Naomi Turner; a sister, Janet Kline of Baltimore; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Beverly Beaty and Skip Benadom of Reno, Nevada; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank their many dear friends and neighbors; the Special Education Department of Lewisville, Texas ISD; Pastor Scott Sundbye of Faith Lutheran Church, Gainesville, Texas; doctors and nurses at Denton Regional and Presbyterian hospitals of Dallas; and the nurses and caregivers of Cross Timbers Hospice of Ardmore for all their support and loving care.
