Apostle and Founder, Kingdom Life Ministries, International On Tuesday, April 25, 2006, Dr. Lorraine Alston made her transition into her heavenly home.
She was a Franklin County, Virginia native who was called into the ministry in 1967 while residing in Washington, D.C. She received training through Washington Bible College and under the ministries of Apostle Walter Kearse and Pastor Paul Gaskins and was later ordained and commissioned as a national evangelist for the Gospel of Deliverance, Inc.
After extensive travel throughout the East Coast and the Mid-West, God directed Dr. Alston to minister a thirty-day revival in Roanoke, Virginia. It was in the midst of this revival through vision and prophetic confirmation that she received instruction from the Lord to start a work that became Deliverance Church of Christ. The church was organized in 1971 and in 1975 Dr. Alston became the first African American woman in Roanoke to contract and build a church from the ground up. The church is located at the corner of Mercer Avenue and 20th Street, Northwest.
As her ministry continued to extend throughout the country, Dr. Alston was ordained as an Apostle to the body of Christ in 1997. In 1988, Deliverance Church of Christ became Kingdom Life Ministries, International. Under Apostle Alston's leadership, Kingdom Life developed an expanding outreach ministry. The choir, "Voices of Life", has been an effective outreach ministry building bridges in every segment of the community.
Other outreach ministries include "The Voice of Life", a weekly TV program which is aired on Cox Cable; audio and video ministries, programs at the local nursing homes, prison ministries, the development of a cross-cultural and cross-denominational covenant relationship with St. John's Episcopal Church that has led to the joint building of two Habitat for H Humanity homes, and the sending of mission teams to Binaba, Ghana.
The latest aspect of this project was the development of an import/export business, The Binaba Shop, located on the historic Roanoke City market. Proceeds from the store are being used to partner with the villagers of Zebilla to help build and establish a family medical clinic within that community as well as the creation and development of cottage industries providing desperately needed alternatives of support and livelihood.

In support of her global vision she was an active member of Kingdom Network International and Ark of the Covenant International Network.
On June 10, 2002 Apostle Alston was given The Degree of Honorary Doctor of Religious Philosophy from Tabernacle Bible College and Seminary. All of these projects represent Apostle Alston's vision of the church's commitment and role in the community and her commitment to the breaking down of racial, economic, social and religious barriers that have separated the body of Christ.
Apostle Alston was also a pioneer in other areas. God positioned her in the Roanoke Valley thirty-five years ago with a revelation message and Kingdom principles. She was recognized as an articulate spokeswoman in the Kingdom Life message and she initiated in the early 1980's the Kingdom Life Ministers Conference to teach and expound the biblical basis for the understanding of the Kingdom of God as a "now" expression.
This message of Kingdom Life and of man's unity with Christ has touched innumerable lives with the anointing power of the Holy Spirit empowering those who seek a deeper walk with God. Apostle Alston walked as a living epistle of love and grace.
She leaves to celebrate this legacy two daughters, Renee Brooks (Arthur Brooks) of Roanoke, Virginia and Valerie Pinkney of Atlanta, Georgia; two brothers, James Ferguson of Richmond, Virginia and John "Joe" Ferguson of Roanoke; two sisters, Mazie Waller of Brooklyn, New York and Alice Wright (Rudolph Wright) of Moneta, Virginia; one aunt, Tabitha Dudley of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Valerie Staten of Roanoke and Christina Pinkney of Atlanta; three grandsons, Derrick Simpson, Bryan Simpson, both of Roanoke and Vincent Pinkney of Charlottesville, Virginia; two great-grandsons, Khari Brice and Tarell Simpson; two great-granddaughters, Bryonna Simpson and LaNiya Simpson, all of Roanoke; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Contributions to the Kingdom Life Ministries building fund as well as flowers are being accepted on behalf of the family. Funeral services will be 12 noon Friday, April 28, 2006 at Kingdom Life Ministries with the Rev. Kathy O'Keeffe officiating.
