Philippine President. Osmena served as the Vice President of the Philippines from 1935 to 1941, and 1941 to 1944, and then President of the Philippines from August 1, 1944 to May 28, 1946. A native of Cebu City, Cebu, he was a member of the prominent Osmena family which also includes his son Senator Sergio Osmena Jr., and grandsons Senators Sergio Osmena III and John Osmena. Born a Chinese-mestizo, he studied at the San Juan de Letran College in Manila, Philippines, and at the University of San Tomas where he studied law, passing the bar in 1903. A life-long friend of Manuel L. Quezon, he also served on the war staff of General Emilio Aguinaldo, as a courier and a journalist. Osmena also founded the 'El Nuevo Dia' newspaper in 1900, of which he was editor. In 1904, he was appointed the Governor of Cebu, and served for three years, running for the first Philippine Assembly in 1907. He was later elected Speaker of the Philippine Assembly, and helped set up the Nacionalista Party with Quezon to help foil the Partido Federalista Party of Manila politicians. Osmena was elected an assemblyman in 1907 and served there until 1922. In 1933 he went to the United States to secure passage of the Hare-Hawes-Cutting Independence Bill. Osmena continued his political career as the Vice President and President until he was defeated for President by Manuel Roxas in the 1946 election. Osmena retired to his his birthplace of Cebu where he passed away at the Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Quezon City, Philippines, on October 19, 1961, at the age of 83.
