Cpl. Eric Lueken of Dubois, Indiana was a 2001 graduate of Northeast Dubois High School, and joined the Marine Corps in October 2003. He served in Afghanistan from November 2004 to June 2005, and left on March 11 for seven months in Iraq. After his time in Afghanistan, Eric told his mother he was not taking life for granted anymore. Pictures from that country show Eric with Afghan children, and he hated to see the way those children were forced to live. His company nicknamed him Radio, due to his love of the movie "Super Troopers" and because he was a Radio Operator. Before entering the Marine Corps, he worked for Patoka Water in Dubois, Indiana, and was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors. Eric was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church in Dubois and an honorary member of the Southern Indiana Leathernecks Detachment Marine Corps League. He had planned to marry his girlfriend, Ericka Merkel, when he came back from Iraq. He is survived by his parents, Glenn Jake and Melinda Lueken, brother, Brent, grandparents, Elvira Denu and Louis Lueken. Eric's awards include the Purple Heart, two Combat Action Ribbons, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Sea Service Deployment ribbon. He died in Anbar province Iraq at age 23.
