Rachel Emma Lawlis was the daughter of Peter Benton & Sarah Ann (Rhodes) Lawlis. Her brothers and sisters were, James Algernon, Milton Allen, Simon Peter, Sarah Jane, Phillip Willard, Martha Elizabeth, Alfred Stephen, Dr. William Clayton, Virginia Clementine, Jacob Martin, Charlotte Alma, Rev. John Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Edward, and Annie Lonettie. Several of her brothers migrated to West Texas and became farmers.

She married Robert William Baker November 10, 1891 in Hot Springs County, Arkansas. Their children were Claude Lawlis (01-17-1893 - 08-30-1901), Nella Vance (12-28-1894 - 06-27-1896), William Percy (05-29-1897 - 08-01-1898), Charles James (09-22-1899 - 04-13-1977), Milton Lelus (05-07-1902 - 12-21-1982), Lois Natalie, Emma Ruth (03-05-1913 - 03-18-1913), Estelle, and Olive Eloise Baker.
