Natural Bridge, Jan. 10.—The death of John Whiting Nichols, an aged resident of this place, occurred at his late home at 4 Wednesday afternoon, following an illness of ten weeks. On Thursday last he suffered a paralytic shock [stroke] from which he never regained consciousness, gradually growing weaker until the end came.
He was born in the town of Denmark, Lewis county, in 1834, the son of the late Platt and Nellie Austin Nichols. In 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Laura Hastings of Wilna, who survives him. To this union five children were born, two sons, Leon of Amsterdam [and] George of Syracuse, and three daughters, Mrs. Seymour Caswell and Mrs. Frank Schwartz of Carthage and little Rachel, who died in early childhood.
For many years he was employed as salesman for the late Hiram McCollom of Carthage, in his general store. He served in the civil war, enlisting in Company A, (186th?) N.Y. Volunteers. Following the war he engaged in the carpenter's trade and farming. Later in years he retired from active labors and sold his farm and moved to this village, where he had since resided. Besides his widow and children he is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Amelia Snyder of Osceola, Neb. He was a member of William T. Sherman Post, G.A.R. from its organization.
He was a man of sterling qualities and had the honor and respect of all classes of people.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 1:30 from the Universalist church, of which he was a member, Rev. G. D. [George Delbert] Walker of Carthage, a former pastor, officiating. The remains will be placed in Hillside vault until spring, when he will be laid to rest beside his little daughter in the family plot at Sand Hill.
