Reuben was the son of Orrin B. and Penelope Gates Chapman. As a young man he left Connecticut and worked his way west, finally settling in Lake Co IN. He married Matilda Bryant Bailey 7 Jul 1840 in LaPorte Co IN and helped raise her family as well as a son of their own. Reuben was killed by a falling tree.
