Mary Shafer Beltz was born August 17, 1874 at Bethe, MO (both parents born in Pennsylvania) passed away at the hospital in Morris, Illinois, (while living in Gardner, IL) Jan 26, 1915 having been taken suddenly ill about two weeks ago and never recovered.
The deceased was united in marriage to Jeremiah Adam Beltz on March 12, 1890 in Downs, Kansas. The Christian mother is survived by five children, 2 boys and 3 girls, namely, John S. of Gardner, and Willis H of Nickerson Kansas, Ruby C. of Gardner, and Elizabeth W, and Ruth A of Nickerson Kansas, besides her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Shafer of Crete, Neb, 2 sisters, Mr.s Christian Moffet of Bloomington and Mrs. Flora Pugh of Crete Nebraska, and one brother, Henry Shafer of Idaho Falls, Idaho.
The family moved to Illinois in the year 1897 coming to Grundy County near Gardner, 1905 and moving into the town of Gardner in 1908 where she lived a quite life until her sudden death.
Shortly after her residence in Gardner she, like a thoughtful mother went with her children to the nearest church, she also like her children became a member of the Sunday school. This shows what she thought of her children she was planning for their future, she believed her offspring were to live forever and she was going to give them a proper start.
She showed her faith in the future life and in Jesus by uniting with the Presbyterian Church of Gardner. The sick room was always made cheerful by her presence. And though her life had many crosses, yet she bore them patently as seeing His who is invisible. She took up her crosses and her burdens and cheerfully followed the lowly Christ.

After the funeral her remains were taken back to Morris and then shipped to Chicago for cremation. (This information was added by BH to the obituary as it appeared in the newspaper.)
