A. BOYD HAMILTON was the Secretary of the Pennsylvania State Senate. He was born at Harrisburg, a son of Hugh and Rosanna Boyd Hamilton, and was educated by private tutors and at the Harrisburg Academy, later following his father into the newspaper business. He was appointed a commissioner of the city in 1860 and held many municipal offices. He was one of the original founders of the Historical Society of Dauphin County and served as its president until his death. He was also active in various charitable and religious organizations of the city, was an original member of the Harrisburg Presbyterian church, involved in the establishment of City Hospital, the organization of the Public Library, and president of the Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society.

A. Boyd Hamilton's maternal grandfather was ADAM BOYD ( 1746-1814), a Revolutionary War soldier who and settled in Lancaster County. He arrived in Harris ferry about 1783, married Jeannette Macfarlane, and settled permanently as a farmer in Harrisburg in 1784. He was active in the affairs of the county, the city, and the organization of the Presbyterian church in Harrisburg. He was guardian of the Hanna and Maclay minor children.

A. Boyd Hamilton married first Catharine Louisa Naudain (1823-1883). He later married Isabella Moore Hays, daughter of Samuel Hays and who, although 30 years his junior, only survived him 7 years.

In his genealogy, "Hamilton Family Record" (1874), A. Boyd Hamilton gave the lineage of his great-grandfather John Hamilton, who came from County Down, Ireland to Pennsylvania in 1729 with his uncle Hance Hamilton who led a colony of Scots-Irish settlers to Marsh Creek in Adams County. The book traces John Hamilton the immigrant to his great-great-grandfather John Hamilton of Hamilton's Bawn (father of Sir Hans Hamilton of Hamilton's Bawn), the son of Rev. Hans Hamilton who was a grandson of James Hamilton 3rd laird of Raploch and his wife Isabel Weir of Blackwood, Lanarkshire.
The family bible of A. Boyd Hamilton's great-grandfather John Hamilton, nephew of Hance Hamilton, contains on its flyleaf "We landed 1729," as cited in "Gilmor, Hanna, Scott, Hamilton" (1932) by Elizabeth Gilmore, p.174. Also ref., The Boyd Family by Katherine Cox Gottschalk (1935), pp.19-20,45,etc.
