Born in Greensville County, VA on 03 Mar 1791 to William Sykes and Burchett Lundy Turner. He led a regiment during the War of 1812 and was stationed at Norfolk. Would move to North Carolina and then to Decatur, AL where he owned land six miles west of the city. He was a member of the Alabama Legislature in 1828 and was the director of the Old State Bank in Decatur for six years and president in 1839. James Turner Sykes married Sarah Winfield Dancy Sykes and had 4 children. After his wife passed he would eventually move to Mississippi where he passed away on 25 Jun 1849 in Aberdeen (Monroe), MS.
