James was born March 20, 1842, in England to immigrant parents Thomas Paul Beddis and Ann Cole.
His parents and younger brother, Joseph Hiram Thomas Beddis, died not long after their voyage to America on the ship Windermere in 1854.
Together with his younger sister, Susannah Beddes, he headed west to Salt Lake City. The orphans were greeted upon their arrival in Utah by Joseph Robinson and his wife, Alice, who would raise them.
James eventually married Alice Booth, date and place unknown.
He died January 7, 1889, in Benson, Cache, Utah at the age of 46 and is buried in Hyde Park Cemetery.
