Nancy Gibbs Chapin was the daughter of Joseph Sommerville and his second wife Elizabeth. Her father Joseph was one of 5 brothers who emigrated to America from Gransha near Londonderry in Northern Ireland. Nancy Gibbs was named after the deceased fiance of her Uncle William Sommerville who settled in Martinsburg. Nancy had at least 9 siblings, Col John Sommerville, Robert M Sommerville killed at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814, Dr. Maxwell Sommerville who died in 1836 in Philadelphia, William Sommerville who died in Havana in 1811, Mrs Rue Pindall, Mrs Daniel Morris, Mrs Stephen Morgan, Elizabeth Sommerville & Joseph Sommerville who died in Bath.
Nancy was given in marriage by her brother Maxwell. She was the 1st wife of Phineas Chapin. Phineas Chapin was originally from Massachusetts and relocated to Clarksburg as a land agent. He studied law with his brother-in-law James Pindall and was later clerk of the court, and a founding member of the local Presbyterian church. Nancy and Phineas were the parents of 8 children all born between 1820-35.
