His parents, William Dubley Hargrove and Charlotte "Lottie" Chappell built an Inn at a stagecoach stop between Houston and Austin. In 1847, Mary, sister of John Alexander, purchased 100 acres and established a settlement naming it after her grandfather, Robert Wooding Chappell, which became Chappell Hill, Texas.
